COMMANDARIA ORCHESTRA & FRIENDS Chamber Music Concert Series

The first season of The Commandaria Orchestra* & Friends Chamber Music Concert Series begins with four concerts that will take place at the Knights’ Courtyard at the Cyprus Wine Museum in Erimi, where the orchestra is based.

The Commandaria Orchestra and friends aim, amongst others, the spread of the musical culture of Cyprus, as well as the spread of classic music works directly linked to the Greek tradition, history and mythology.

The first season of the Chamber Music Concert Series is inspired by its purposes and it presents the works of performers, composers and instrumental ensembles that are based in Cyprus.

The first concert is scheduled for October 21st where the newly established Acordes Guitar Ensemble will present, among others, a program with works by G. Bizet, M. Ravel, R. Clayderman and of the Cypriot composers Michalis Andronicou and Evagoras Karayiorgis. The Ensemble is staffed by young guitarists who are led by the guitarist Zoe Paisanou who have received excellent reviews on their first presentations.

For the three-day 24th, 25th and 26th of October three piano duets are scheduled.

On October 24th two acknowledged performers, who regularly present their work in concert halls abroad, will present a varied program with works of the piano and the Lieder repertoire. Manolis Neophytou will perform works by Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich and Brahms. He will also accompany the soprano Margarita Elia performing masterpieces of the French and German Romantic Lied.

The next night the duo Doros Zisimos (cello) and Corina Vassiliou (piano) will perform works of the classical and romantic repertoire, as well as popular works of Astor Piazzolla arranged for cello and piano. The concert will conclude with the work Quatros sonnetos para um pensamento of the Cypriot composer Constantin Papageorgio.

On October 26th the tenor Marios Andreou and the pianist Annini Tsiouti will present a special program of works by Greek and Cypriot composers such as Yannis Konstantinidis, Pavlos Carrer, Theodore Damocles, Anastasia Guy etc. The pianist Annini Tsiouti will also perform the circle '8 Dances from the Greek Islands' by Yiannis Konstantinidis and the 'Jocular Lullaby' of the pioneer Cypriot composer Faidros Kavallaris. This program will be presented at the Cyprus Wine Museum a few days after its performance by the duo Andreou - Tsiouti at the Auditorium de Pianos Kleber in the town of Luxembourg during the International Forum Artistes en Herbe 2014.

* The appellation of the Commandaria Orchestra is due to the position of the Cyprus Wine Museum, at the historical headquarters of the Great Commandery, which was built by the Knights of the St John Order. Commandaria is also the name of the universally unique and the most ancient sweet drink of Cyprus, for which references have been made by Homer and Hesiod.
