We’re delighted to welcome Cypriot-born, UK-based pianist Stavroula Thoma to the Commandaria Orchestra & Friends Chamber Music Series. Our community of Chamber Music Friends will recall her brilliant virtuosity, beautiful musicality, and the emotional intensity that defines her performances.
Recital Rationale
Having recently embraced the precious role of being a mother, I find myself reflecting upon the cyclical nature of life – the coming and going of people, days, and emotions.
The circular waves we see in nature mirror those of our lives: the wind blowing here and there, the sun and moon rising and setting, flowers blooming, and water flowing.
Andrea Granitzio’s “Concentric Circles in the Water” are a set of three contemporary pieces, filled with impressionistic, atmospheric colours. Liszt’s “Au Lac de Walenstadt” is a dreamy work that communicates the stillness of a lake in contrast to the earth’s troubled waters. Tchaikovsky’s “The Seasons” are twelve pieces referring to the twelve months of the year. They include life’s great events intertwined with the raw elements of nature.
